The Cinque Terre

Five little villages, on the Ligurian coast, from the north: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Very cute, hillsides terraced with grapevines.  Travel between villages by train, boat, bus, or walking.

Had big mud slides 2 years ago, so some of the paths closed, and look like they will be indefinitely.

But, even in October, too many tourists.  We walked from Vernazza to Corniglia, with a constant stream of walkers in both directions.  This makes it a destination we would not bother coming back to.  We can compare it with Maratea, which was so much nicer, and so few tourists.

But we did see tall ships at La Spezia, where we stayed.
