Firenze - Florence

We travelled by train from Salerno, Kerryn went to Rome.
Walked around the city, amazed at the grandeur of the buildings.

We awoke to grey skies, and some drizzle.   Headed out to walk around town.

Stopped to see the world championship bike race go past us, unfortunately it also brought pouring rain. No photos of race on my phone.  We have some on the good camera.

After crossing the Ponte Vecchio, we went to visit David.

We also had a Florentine tbone steak to share - 1kg of rump steak.  Raw steak shown below.

Maratea, 200 km south of Naples

We travelled south from Napoli to Salerno, where we hired a car for a week.  Fortunately Peter is a confident driver.
With the aid of our tablet, Google maps and WiFi, we travelled to our timeshare week at Maratea. The main feature here is a large Christ, second only to the one in Rio.  At night, you can't see the hill, only the floodlight image in the sky.

Our apartment was on the hill below ( second photo)

The third photo shows the road from our apartment.

The scenery was stunning, the roads windy, glad it was Peter driving.

The church at the top was very old (732 ad).

We also found a church in a cave, a rocky beach and the old town.

Kerryn joined us for a few days.

We did a day trip to Matera to see the caves of the Sassi ( Passion of Christ), and the Ionian sea for a paddle.

We had a day at the beach, a day driving in the hills, looking for castles.

Last day we visited Amalfi coast, and saw so many tourists.

We dropped the car back to Salerno, with no damage.  Amazing, considering the roads and the other drivers

Napoli

We began our Italian segment in Naples.  Flew in from Budapest.
We stayed on Piazza Garibaldi near the railway station, had a view of Vesuvius from our room.

The castle in Budapest

This is a walled city, with St Matthias church, museums, art gallery, hotels, private accommodation, and views over the city

Szentendre

We visited reconstructed housing from different parts of Hungary, then visited the town centre
